This is a trailer. 53' away at the other end is a vehicle designed for pulling said trailer. These contraptions go between people’s places of business picking up or delivering goods. Once they have loaded or unloaded, they depart—often in the reverse direction if space is limited.

WHY would you park behind one?

Also, when you see one in the wild, you may notice they are quite big.

HOW do you not notice when it starts moving? And why would you waste time honking instead of getting out of they way? They don’t move very fast and the driver is a long way away.

...

They got off lucky with a bent plate... Still, I don’t understand ending up in that situation in the first place. There are empty parking spaces and a big sign that says not to park in the laneway. And an empty parking lot next door that they went to after being displaced.

Yesterday I was in a turn lane waiting for traffic to clear so I could turn left. Someone on their phone drifted into the turn lane from the oncoming lane and decided to honk at me and scream at me to move rather than, you know, realize they were in the wrong lane. Bit of a clench moment happened in my car but he realized what was happening before he smashed into me.

People are awful drivers, but awfully lucky sometimes...

A 40 ton truck decided to change from the left to the right lane in which I was in. No big deal, sure. The catch: the fuckwit changed lanes in a two lane left turn and came extremely close to just swerving into me.

Someone’s AZ-1 died because a RAV 4 backed up onto the hood of it trying to get out of the way of a turning tractor trailer. She never even looked in her backup camera and said oh that was why the car was beeping at her so much. People a very dumb... and that’s why we can’t have nice things.

Runner up is people who are too lazy to navigate turns properly and drift across the center line into your lane and then flip out at you when you lightly honk to alert them they are about to hit you head on.

Must have been moving pretty good to get a RAV4 on the hood of anything.

I’m not sure if I’m picturing this accurately in my head. The truck was parked, and somebody parked behind its trailer? And this took place in a “laneway”, which I presume is another word for alley? What truck/lorry driver would pull into an alley like that and have any hope of backing out of there? Don’t they always back INTO places like that?

I was going to say alley but it’s not really small enough for that.

Curtainsider truck. Our load was on the driver’s side and the laneway is on the right side (from the street) of the building—therefore the driver had to drive in instead of back in. There’s lots of space between the front of the building and the street, so it’s not totally blind backing out. You know, unless someone parks directly behind you.

Illustrated the best I can. Scale is obviously rubbish.

(Just to be clear, I’m not trying to shift blame from the car to the truck driver. I’m guessing that this is like a fire lane / loading zone, and the car had no business being there.)

But it still surprises me that he’d put himself into a position of having to back out into the road like that, even if he does have a little more room to make the turn. Must not be a busy street.

My buddy (we’ll call him M ike) was working for a small diesel repair shop with   two repair bays. The bays were separated with a wide space between the doors. There was a HUGE sign that clearly indicated there was no parking between the bays. The parking lot was tight and that space was needed to get trucks in and out of the bays without running over the front curb and messing up the lawn.

One day, the owner ignored his own sign and parked his Jaguar there (no idea of the model, Mike isn’t a car guy). After Mike wrapped up the repairs on a dump truck, he backed it out of the bay and cut the wheels so he could make the turn without backing over the curb. Instead, he backed over the back half of that Jaguar. By the time he felt the truck respond to a big cat under its tires, it was too late and the damage was done.

The owner wasn’t too mad. After all, he put the sign there after he had done the same thing to a customer’s car.

Basically, the main loading door is right at the back of the building. It’s not a truck-level dock. All deliveries go to the back, as do most walk-in customers. There is a man-door in the side of the building too that we use for customers who are picking up small orders and who will only be a couple minutes. It’s not a fire lane but we DO need it clear.

The only other option is sit right on the street, which we will do sometimes if the driver doesn’t like the idea of backing out... but it’s not really busy enough to have issues getting out again and the lane is pretty rough for a heavily loaded indoor forklift. It’s not an ideal arrangement but it’s what we have.

At the time of this post though, there really was no other option—construction right out front and they’d be blocking the only lane that was left.

At least he sounds like a reasonable guy.

Nah, the AZ-1 has a very low front end.
